About this role As an Assistant Systems Engineering Manager in Flight Avionics (FLX) Connectivity Competence Centre, reporting to the Solution Engineering Manager, you will have the opportunity to develop your Engineering Management skills by leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams on small to medium sized programmes or product developments. The FLX business serves a wide variety of customers in the aerospace sector; covering both the Civil and Military domains. Your role could include: Supporting the design and delivery of our next generation Tactical Mission Management System Supporting the design and delivery of our next generation SATCOM Terminal (Flytlink) for use on the Iridium network The development of our next generation Secure Intercom and Information System for military fixed and rotary wing platforms Supporting delivery of the several studies we are undertaking to shape the future of aircraft communication systems As a People 1st Employer, we are passionate about providing you with opportunities to advance your engineering career and are committed to giving our employees the support they need to reach their professional goals. The successful candidate will be someone who Is an experienced Systems Engineering Professional, who was worked across the engineering development lifecycle but wants to develop into an Engineering Management role Has an understanding of Work Package Management for development programmes; including Planning, Risk & Opportunity Management, and Scheduling Has an excellent track record of delivering their personal commitments to cost and schedule, with outputs meeting the satisfaction of the customer Is keen to develop their leadership skills and demonstrates the potential to effectively manage the performance of a team, including; motivating their team, recognition of good performance, tackling under performance, and the supporting development of staff Is capable of representing the engineering view of programmes to all stakeholders (internal and external) of the programme, and can communicate complex technical issues or ideas in a manner appropriate for a non-technical audience Understands the importance of following and continuously developing engineering process, and tracking progress through the use of appropriate engineering metrics Is a team player with a "can-do" attitude that performs effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and promotes the values of inclusiveness and diversity Understands their role within an organisation, how it supports delivery of the engineering vision, and strategy, and can plan or re-plan work accordingly to align with the needs of the business Desired knowledge, qualifications and experience Minimum of a Bachelor Degree (BEng, BSc) in a Numerate, Scientific or Engineering subject or Higher Education/equivalent training and experience Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering teams Excellent communications skills, both verbally and written, with the ability to present and explain technical and complex problems, tailored appropriately for the audience An understanding of System Engineering and System Engineering Processes and Practices, including knowledge of the application and tailoring of Product Development/Engineering Lifecycles An ability to work with combinations of technologies, to integrate and verify them in a logical and structured way into a system in order to fully satisfy a Customer's requirement PC Literate: Windows, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio Experience of requirements capture and management (e.g. in DOORS), or experience of system architectural modelling or simulation (e.g. in MatLab or Simulink) is preferred but not essential Aerospace and Avionic System domain knowledge is welcomed but not essential Key tasks and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to Supporting the Engineering Manager in developing and executing management plans for engineering developments The continual, optimised delivery of engineering milestones and outputs to time, cost and quality, focusing on the customer needs at all times The tasking and driving of the engineering team through effective monitoring/control (such as stand-ups and visual management) The management of one or several engineering Work Packages, including; assumptions, dependencies, risks and opportunities Coordination and management of all resources that support the engineering process, including speciality engineering disciplines, and ensuring Design for Manufacture and Supportability is considered as part of the technical solution through a seamless relationship with the supply chain, production, ILS engineering and training teams The reporting of the progress of engineering activities to stakeholders (Inc. establishing appropriate metrics with forecasts) Defining/ensuring adherence to the Engineering Lifecycle and the governance of engineering activities, including selection and application of appropriate toolsets
